Sanibel equals Fun for the Whole Family

If you haven’t heard, FamilyFun Travel named Sanibel Island as the number one travel destination overall. The top designation is the result of a survey of 2,000 families rating their top spots across the country. Broken down into categories, Sanibel was awarded the Top Tourist Town and the Top Destination in the South. FamilyFun mentioned the favorite island activities families enjoy while visiting our island – strolling the beach, hunting for shells, relaxing in the sunshine and sightseeing at J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. Add to that cycling, kayaking and paddleboarding and you have something for the whole family to enjoy.

Moving here with my family in 1987 was the best decision we made. We’ve enjoyed countless beach days, sunsets and hours by the pool. Here are some of my favorite family friendly Sanibel Island activities.

  1. Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. This one-of-a-kind museum is devoted solely to seashells. A few features include the world’s largest horse conch, money shells that Native Americans used for trades all the way into Mid-west America and an interactive treasure hunt. Be sure to take a few hours during your stay and check out the museum, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find!
  2. J.N. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. Spend some time at this birding paradise and discover some of the rarest wild birds in the world. Be sure to call ahead and plan your trip during low-tide when bird watching is the best. Stop at the visitor’s center for some fun activities and refuge information. At only $5 per car load it’s an inexpensive family activity.
  3. Just Enjoy. What makes Sanibel one of the best family tourist town is the abundance of things to do at little or no cost. Spend an afternoon on any of the white sand beaches and you’ll see beautiful shore birds; plovers, gulls and brown pelicans. If you’re lucky you’ll see an Osprey dive down for his dinner or a Black Skimmer cruise along just inches above the water. And the best sighting of all – dolphins frolicking in their natural habitat.

I hope you and your family have an opportunity to discover everything that Sanibel Island has to offer. Just let me know how if I can help you find the perfect spot for your vacation!
